Pokaran is Rajasthan’s offbeat gem. Pokaran is a small town and a municipality located in Jaisalmer district of Western Rajasthan. Pokaran town is situated in a triangle between Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Bikaner. It is a sparsely colonized area consists of mainly sand and scrub. In 1974 this Pokaran town of Jaisalmer district suddenly caught the international focus when Indian government detonated the nuclear devices. It was then ironically code-named “The Buddha Smiles”. Pokaran is also famous for very hot chillies as well as the articles made from the camel leather. Although Pokaran is still an under-development town, it was once a capital of Thakurs (chief) of Marwar. A trading community ‘Maheswaris’ constructed a lot of stunning and heritage hawelis. The Pokaran’s main thoroughfare is Gandhi Chauk where women, in traditional colourful Rajasthani dresses, selling vegetables.
